Healthy Relationships

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

Ecclesiates 4:9-10

Learning Plan Summary

Overview

The Healthy Relationships Learning Plan teaches proven perspectives and practices for developing and maintaining healthy, vibrant relationships in all areas of life. The Plan includes self-assessments, books, articles, and videos that give the learner a solid foundation of understanding of (1) core facets of a healthy relationship, (2) personal attributes that affect an individual’s perceptions of their interactions with others, and (3) attitudes, tools, and approaches to improve interactions and connection with every person in your life.

With an average of two hours of active study per week, we estimate the Plan can be finished in 6 to 8 weeks. Learners will gain the most benefit by applying new concepts in the material on a daily basis as they progress.

The Approach

We begin with information on the different ways human beings perceive love, with an opportunity to assess your own love language(s). From there, we explore attachment styles and how they impact our behavior and motivations in relationships. The importance of friendships is covered next, and learners have the chance to experience the excellent “36 Questions” tool for developing emotional intimacy with another person.

Armed with an understanding of how to develop a relationship, we then study tools for navigating the challenges that come from misunderstandings, unspoken expectations, and conflicting priorities/goals. We delve into the benefits and techniques of setting and communicating healthy boundaries for ourselves, resolving conflict, and how to make authentic apologies that contribute to healing hurts within relationships.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the plan, you will be able to:

  • Identify your top love languages and what you need to feel loved
  • Detect and “speak” the love languages of others
  • Identify your attachment style and understand how it manifests in your relationships
  • Recognize patterns of behavior that don’t serve your relationships
  • Articulate the benefits and establish a network of friends
  • Be at peace with others, as much as it is in your power
  • Identify your needs and set healthy boundaries for yourself
  • Articulate your boundaries in a firm yet respectful way

Knowing your attachment style is the first step to creating more meaningful connections, feeling valued and developing more harmony in all of your relationships! Attachment theory, developed by British psychiatrist John Bowlby in the 1960s, explains how our brains become programmed to help us survive and thrive in the environment we are born into. Our self-esteem, ability to control our emotions and the quality of our relationships are all affected by our attachment style. We have known for over 50 years that attachment styles can predict and explain our behaviour as children. More recent research shows that attachment styles also continue to affect our behaviour in adulthood. Take this quick assessment to discover your style.

Friendship is one of the deepest pleasures of life. But in our busy, fast-paced, mobile world, we have lost this rich view of friendship and instead settled for shallow acquaintances based on little more than similar tastes or shared interests. Helping us recapture a vision of true friendship, pastor Drew Hunter explores how God designed us for friendship and what it really looks like in practice, giving us practical advice to cultivate the kinds of true friendships that lead to true and life-giving joy.

Conflict is inevitable, but peace, especially among Christians, is essential. When conflict turns into peace, frustration becomes clarity and turmoil becomes unity. When conflict turns into peace, God is glorified. But how do we find peace without ignoring our problems? How do we pursue unity without compromising on our principles? The Path of a Peacemaker offers a simple, proven path to a lifestyle of peace. It guides you through an examination of your own personal story, identifying the origins of your hopes and fears. It invites you to understand and embrace a biblical approach to conflict, take responsibility for your own part in conflict, and connect with others in a spirit of humility as you learn to listen first, ask for forgiveness, and move forward, even if the conflict remains unresolved. Pastors, counselors, and anyone who is dealing with conflict at home, work, church, or with friends will find this book a vital tool.
